*** ROMDOOR SV ***
Welcome to RomDoor SV, a special version of RomDoor made for Software
Vault CD-ROM disks. If you have purchased Software Vault #1 previously
you will find that RomDoor SV already has its file database installed.
RomDoor is made for Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) System Operators
(SysOps). RomDoor SV will work with ANY BBS software that uses the
DOOR.SYS file when executing doors.
RomDoor SV can be left on the CD-ROM disk or copied to the hard drive
for improved performance. If you can't decide whether or not to install
RomDoor SV on the hard drive here are a few reasons why you should:
* Improved performance
* Ability to create log files.
* Ability to add more Software Vault CD-ROM disks.
CD-ROM INSTALLATION:
If you decide to leave the RomDoor SV on the CD-ROM disk, a generic
batch file has been provided to load up RomDoor. Copy ROMDOOR.BAT to
the hard drive and give it the appropriate name. Make sure that any
"ChDir" call done before loading up RomDoor SV only changes to the
directory where your BBS creates its DOOR.SYS, since RomDoor needs to
find the DOOR.SYS file in the directory when executed from the batch
file. You will need to place a drive letter in before the
"\ROMDOOR\ROMDV NOLOG" line. DO NOT take the NOLOG option out of the
batch file since RomDoor SV will attempt to log to the CD-ROM disk,
and you know that is not possible and will result in a run-time error.
If you want RomDoor SV to create a log file you will NEED to install
it on the hard drive.
HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION:
If you decide to install RomDoor SV on the hard drive execute
SETUPRD.BAT with a path, to install it to, as the first parameter.
For example: SETUPRD C:\ROMDOOR
This will install RomDoor SV on your hard drive in the C:\ROMDOOR
directory. Follow the instructions for installing the batch file
located in the CD-ROM INSTALLATION section above. Note that since you
have RomDoor SV installed on the hard drive you can delete the NOLOG
command.
EXPLANATION OF MAIN MENU OPTIONS:
[A]ll Files List - This option takes the complete listing of files for
a selected area and puts them into a zip file of the users choice
for later off-line viewing. This is a great option for users who
have limited time on-line or don't want to waste the money looking
through all the available files on-line.
[E]dit Marked List - This shows the user a list of all on-line files
that have been marked for download. The user can then alter or add
to the list as they see fit.
[O]nline/Switch CD's - This option allows the user to select which
CD-ROM library they wish to view. Pressing "O" will display a list
of available CD-ROMs and show where they are on-line or off-line.
*NOTE* Please note the ONLY SoftwareVault CD-ROMs can be on-line
with this special version of RomDoor. CD-ROMs from other
manufacturers can be supported, but only as off-line
CD-ROMs. This means that the user must (R)equest the file
and then the SysOp must copy it to the hard disk for the
user to download. For information on this feature see
"Setting Up RomDoor SV To Handle Off-line Requests" in the
next section.
[H]elp Level - Let the user choose how much help they get. For the
(N)ovice, the main menu is redrawn to screen every time they finish
another option. For the (I)ntermediate user, the prompt and a list
of options all that appears. (E)xpert users only get the prompt for
their next command.
[G]oodbye/Logout - This allow the user to log directly out of the BBS
from the RomDoor SV door.
[L]ist Available Files - This allows the user to view all of the files
on the CD, or only those in a select area, based on the users
option. The display is a standard double line format with full
descriptions.
[T]ext Search for Files - This allows the user to search the entire
database of files of the SoftwareVault on-line for a certain file.
Masks allowed include a file mask, supporting wildcards, and a
description mask. The user can select between a single line or
double line description.
[S]tats on File Areas - Lists the number of files and the total size
of all areas on the current SoftwareVault CD selected.
[R]equested Files List - Shows the user which off-line files have been
requested and allows them to edit the list of requests for copying
and downloading from off-line CDs.
[D]ownload Files - When the user selects this, all of their currently
requested on-line files will be downloaded using any of your BBS's
supported transfer protocols.
[V]iew a Zip - Lets the user view the contents of a .ZIP file archive
that is currently on-line.
[C]olor Toggle - Allows user to switch to Monochrome display for user
without color support.
[?]RomDoor Help - Allows the user access to RomDoor SV's on-line help.
[Q]uit to Main - Lets the user exit the RomDoor SV door and return to
the main menu of the BBS.
SETTING UP ROMDOOR SV TO ALLOW OFF-LINE REQUESTS:
While RomDoor SV is limited to allowing only SoftwareVault CD's to be
on-line for users to download directly from, it does have a request
feature to allow SysOps to support other manufactures CD-ROMs. This
allows users to select files from an off-line CD for download, and the
SysOp to support multiple CD-ROM's without the expense of multiple
drives. These requests are sent to the SysOp and then the SysOp must
move the files to hard disk for the user to download. The procedure to
allow requests to operate is simple.
First, load MAKEROM.EXE and press enter to edit "RomDoor's Main
Parameters". Move the cursor down to "Allow Requests" and press the
SPACE BAR to toggle the field to "YES".
If you want you can put a drive letter in the next field "Drive
Letter". The drive letter that you put in this field will be the first
drive letter the MakeRom will look for the files that it needs to copy
when you try to copy the requested files to the Hard Drive. If MakeRom
doesn't find the file that it is looking for it will say "File Not
Found" and then will ask you the drive letter that the CD-ROM disk is
in.
If you want to limit the amount of files a certain security level can
request then press ENTER on "Edit Security Level Information". Move
the bar to the security level that you want to edit and press ENTER.
There are two ways to limit a security level. The first is by limiting
the amount of files that they can have requested at any given time,
and the second way is to limit the amount of K-Bytes they can have
requested at any given time
Once you have the request feature setup the users will be shown all
the CD-ROM disks that have been configured for the board. If they
decide to download a file from an off-line CD-ROM they will be asked
if they wish to "Request" the file. If they press "yes" then the
request will be added to the request database located in the REQUEST
directory directly off of the RomDoor directory.
It is the SysOps job to maintain the requests and copy the requested
files to the HD. This process has been made simple with the use of
MAKEROM.
The following procedure is for the maintenance of the request feature.
Once a day, or however often you like, load up MAKEROM and select
"Check File Requests". You will be presented with a screen showing all
of the requested files and if they are currently "Available" to the
user. If there are any files that are "Not Ready" then you have to
copy it to the Hard Drive. There are two ways you can go about doing
this. The first is to move the cursor to any file that is "Not Ready"
and press ENTER. The second and most convenient way is to press ALT-A.
MAKEROM will scan the database and check to see if there are any files
that are "Not Ready". If there are, then MAKEROM will prompt you for
the CD-ROM disks to insert and will copy the files from the disks.
TESTING ROMDSV FROM THE COMMAND LINE:
You may also give ROMDSV a test drive to make sure everything is working
correctly. This can be done by logging on locally to your BBS or
executing RomDoor from the command line by typing ROMDOOR LOCAL.
